When I was a girl I hatched the cutest white fluffy Silkie chicken that loved to sleep in my hand and followed me around like a puppy. I named him Suki. My Mom was the best as she allowed me to have many pets even a chicken in my bedroom! Of course when he got big she suggested that we take him to a friends coop so he could have a flock of his own.
It was a bittersweet parting as I wanted to keep him but knew that his future chicken life there would better suit him. Thus the love of chickens bloomed in my heart and lay waiting for years to be fulfilled.
Now I have my own chicken farm and also a few ducks and a guard goose!!! Every day my chickens run into the pasture and free range all day. They are my weeders, fertilizers, pest eaters, entertainers and on top of all that , they feed me delicious eggs daily. Each has its own name and personality and they even know the other chickens names in the flock!
Soon I will be taking orders for Fertile eggs and chicks. I have the new Prairie Bluebell chickens that lay lovely blue eggs and come in all colors. Prairie Bluebells lay regular sized eggs but are a smaller chicken so they eat less feed. They are curious and friendly and like to supervise my outdoor projects!
Icelandic Chickens are the perfect homestead chicken as they were the only type chicken in Iceland for a thousand years and are great at free ranging as they are robust and hardy. Icelandic chickens are considered a genetic treasure. They possess genes that are no longer found in modern heritage breeds. They are beautiful and come in all colors.
Well I did have eggs from my Prairie Bluebells and Icelandic hens ALL winter!!! The Icelandics lay twice as much as the Prairie Bluebells! Their eggs are smaller but you get more. The cold didn't slow their production at all! There are an excellent chicken!
